By the end of the Republic, owning a slave or two was as common even for quite ordinary Romans as owning a car today, and scarcely more reprehensible. Often such slaves would do domestic duties or work on the farm or on the family business alongside the hired labourers, and the could be hard to tell from poor and citizens...
